LAPD - West Valley Station

If you, a loved one or a family member has been arrested by or is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), West Valley Division, it can cause a lot of concerns. Facing such a situation, one may want to know the bail amount (if any) associated with the offense if police deny an own recognizance (OR) release. It is also not unusual to ask what evidence is needed to convict one for the crime that allegedly took place, the defenses possible and the sentence a judge can impose if one is convicted of the crime.
We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is valuable to know a few more things before interacting with any branch of law enforcement. It can be good to know the size of the police or sheriff’s department, the area’s demographics, the most common types of crime the department investigates and just a bit about the area’s history to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful. This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective.
This article is presented with this goal in mind.
The LAPD West Valley Division patrols 33.5 square miles of an area with a population of 196,840 people. The boundaries are Corbin Avenue to the west, Roscoe Boulevard to the north, 405 Freeway to the east and Mulholland Drive to the south. The West Valley Division is responsible for the neighborhoods of Encino, Reseda, Lake Balboa, Sherman Oaks (part), Northridge (part) and Tarzana.
The station has 227 sworn police officer and 30 civilian support staff.
Encino’s population was measured at 44,581 in 2008. It is located to the west of the I-405 (San Diego Freeway) and to the north of the Santa Monica Mountains / Brentwood and mostly to the south of U.S. I-101 (the Ventura Freeway), but northward up to Victory Boulevard and Reseda. Its western neighbor is Tarzana.
Encino’s demographic breakdown was 80.1% Whites; 8.5% Latinos; 4.9% Asians, 2.4% African Americans; and others, 4.1% “others.” Iran (30.1%) and Russia (6.4%) were the most common places of birth for the 32.8% of the residents who were born abroad, an average percentage for Los Angeles.
The median yearly household income in 2008 dollars was $78,529, considered high for the city. The percentage of households that earned $125,000 and up was high for Los Angeles County. The average household size of 2.3 people was low when compared to the rest of the city and the county. Renters occupied 38.4% of the housing stock and house or apartment owners held 61.6%. The percentages of divorced residents and of widowed men and women were among the county's highest.
Encino is home to many celebrities, including the Jackson family (Michael and Janet), Ron Howard, Samuel M. Jackson, Ice Cube, Wiz Khalifa, Johny Carson, Tom Petty, Sean McVay, Johnny Cash, John Wayne, Chris Paul, Marc Anthony and others.
Reseda is north of Encino on the north side of the 101 Freeway and to the west of the I-405 Freeway. In 2010, its population was 74,363.
The 1994 Northridge Earthquake was centered in Reseda, not Northridge. It struck at 4:31 a.m. on January 17 and measured 6.7 on the Richter scale. It remains the only large earthquake to originate directly under a major U.S. city in modern times as well as the most damaging earthquake to strike the U.S. since the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Its epicenter was between Arminta Street and Ingomar Street, just west of Reseda Boulevard.
This was the second time in 23 years the area had been affected by a strong earthquake. On February 9, 1971, the San Fernando Earthquake (also known as the Sylmar earthquake) struck the area with a magnitude of 6.5. Its epicenter also was in Reseda, not Sylmar.
Lake Balboa is a much smaller city than Reseda or Encino. The 2000 U.S. census counted 24,328 residents in the 3.13-square-mile Lake Balboa neighborhood, which is 7,754 people per square mile, about an average population density for the city.
Tarzana is to the west of Encino. It also straddles I-101. It is located on the site of a former ranch owned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is named after Burroughs' fictional jungle hero, Tarzan. Its southern border is Topanga State Park, its eastern neighbor is Encino, it northern border is Reseda and its western neighbor is Woodland Hills.
