Brentwood Police Department

If you, a friend or a family member has been arrested by the Brentwood Police Department, we at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is wise to know more than just what bail may be associated with the offense involved, the elements (requirements) of the crime at issue, the defenses possible and the potential punishment.

We believe it is prudent to know, before interacting with any police department, the size of the police department, the most frequent types of crimes investigated, the demographics of the city and anything else that distinguishes the city from other cities.  This can make one’s communication with police more respectful and meaningful to the police.

The Brentwood Police Department employs seventy-two sworn police officers and has another thirty-six civilian employees, as well as approximately 20 volunteers, making it a relatively large police department within Los Angeles County.

Brentwood is a relatively large city, at 15.22 square miles.  It has 31,344 residents as of the 2000 census.  As of the 2000 census, 84.2% of the population is “non-Hispanic White,” 6.5% Asian American, 4.5% Hispanic, 1.2% African American and the remaining populace is of “other origins.”

Iran (27.2%) and the United Kingdom (4.8%) were the most common places of birth for the 21.1% of the residents who were born abroad—which was a low percentage for Los Angeles as a whole.  The median yearly household income in 2008 dollars was $112,927, high for the city of Los Angeles as well as the county.

Brentwood may be best known for being associated with the O.J. Simpson case.  Brentwood was the site of the 1994 stabbing deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, outside Nicole Brown Simpson's Bundy Drive townhouse.  Nicole's ex-husband, football player and actor O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the murders , but was later found liable for the deaths in a civil trial.  O.J. Simpson's Brentwood home was subsequently sold.  The new owners demolished Simpson's home and built a new residence.

Brentwood is also known as the home of many celebrities such as Lebron James, Reese Witherspoon, Norman Lear, Ben Affleck, Michael Strahan, Jennifer Garner, Alanis Morissette, Alessandra Ambrosio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Hanks, Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer.
It is also known as home to the Veteran’s Administration (VA), alongside the western border of the I-405 Freeway, and San Vicente Boulevard, which runs from the VA to the Pacific Ocean.

According to Neighborhood Scout, Brentwood is safer than 84% of U.S. cities.  While this is good, it still experiences its fair share of property crimes such as auto burglary, residential burglaries, vandalism and other thefts.  There are 110 crimes per square mile in Brentwood, compared to the national average of eighty-four crimes per square mile.

Furthermore, according to Neighborhood Scout, the chance that a person will become a victim of a violent crime in Brentwood; such as armed robbery, aggravated assault, rape or murder; is 1 in 326.  This equates to a rate of three per one thousand inhabitants.

Neighborhood Scout's analysis also reveals that Brentwood's rate for property crime is twenty-two per one thousand population.  This makes Brentwood a place where there is an above average chance of becoming a victim of a property crime, when compared to all other communities in America of all population sizes.  Property crimes are motor vehicle theft, arson, larceny, and burglary. Your chance of becoming a victim of any of these crimes in Brentwood is one in forty-six.

Brentwood is a mostly residential city, however, it does have a few areas with offices and shopping.  The most common industries located in Brentwood are law, accounting and consulting.

A few long time businesses should be noted: Brent-Air Pharmacy, run by the founding Lassoff family from its inception until June 2007, served Brentwood for more than 50 years.  The drug store has been the scene of many famous scandals and, like its defunct West Hollywood cousin Schwab’s, is known as the pharmacy to the stars, where many now-notable actors and actresses worked as delivery boys or "candy counter" girls.

The Brentwood County Mart, near the corner of San Vicente Boulevard and 26th Street next to the Santa Monica city limit, is a shopping and food center that first opened in 1948.
