El Segundo Police Department

If you, a family member or a loved one is under investigation or arrested by the El Segundo Police Department, it is expected that you may need to know the bail amount associated with the offense, the legal and factual requirements to establish that the crime took place, the possible defenses and the sentence a judge can impose if one is convicted of the crime.

Criminal cases involving arrests are filed at the Airport Superior Court on La Cienega Boulevard or at the Clara Shortridge Foltz criminal courts building (CCB) in downtown Los Angeles.

We at Greg Hill & Associates believe it is also good for one to know a few more things before interacting with any police or sheriff’s department.  It is wise to know the size of the police department, the demographics of the city, the most frequent types of crime the department investigates and just a bit about the city’s history to make one’s communication with law enforcement more meaningful, more savvy and perhaps, more respectful.  This can lead to a better outcome than if one lacks such perspective.

This article is presented with this goal in mind.

The El Segundo Police Department has sixty-nine sworn police officers and thirty-nine more civilian employees tasked with protecting and enforcing the law in El Segundo, a city of 16,371 as of the 2020 census.  This is a relatively high staffing level for a city within Los Angeles County with such a small population.  Its eastern boundary is roughly marked by Aviation Boulevard, the western boundary being the Pacific Ocean, its norther boundary being LAX and Manhattan Beach being to its south.  According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 square miles.

According to Neighborhood Scout, “[w]ith a crime rate of sixty-one per one thousand residents, El Segundo has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities.  One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in sixteen.  Within California, more than 98% of the communities have a lower crime rate than El Segundo.”

While this may be true, we at Greg Hill & Associates have not seen such a high crime rate in El Segundo to confirm this.  We have handled many DUI’s, domestic violence and shoplifting cases out of El Segundo.

Neighborhood Scout also found that a lot of the crime that takes place in El Segundo is property crime.  Property crimes that are tracked for this analysis are burglary, larceny over fifty dollars, motor vehicle theft, and arson.  In El Segundo, one’s chance of becoming a victim of a property crime is one in eighteen, which is a rate of fifty-four per one thousand population.

Importantly, Neighborhood Scout found that El Segundo has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the nation according to our analysis of FBI crime data.  This is compared to communities of all sizes, from the smallest to the largest.  In fact, one’s chances of getting one’s car stolen if you live in El Segundo is one in 115.

El Segundo is a significant center of the oil and aerospace industries in Southern California, with roughly three quarters of the city's land dedicated exclusively to industrial and commercial uses, including a Chevron oil refinery, which alone takes up more than a quarter of the entire city.  This refinery has received crude oil from the Amazon region of South America - more than 5,000 barrels per day.

The Douglas Aircraft Company plant in El Segundo was one of the major aircraft manufacturing facilities in California during World War II.  It was one of the major producers of SBC Dauntless dive bombers, which achieved fame in the Battle of Midway.  The facility, now operated by Northrop-Gruman, is still an aircraft plant.

As of 2020, the racial makeup of El Segundo was 78.0% White, 15.7% Hispanic or Latino, 2.0% African American, 8.8% Asian and 4.8% from other races.  5.7% were of mixed race.

According to the 2010 United States Census, El Segundo had a median household income of $84,341, with 4.8% of the population living below the federal poverty line.  Boeing employees 12,000 people at its El Segundo facility.  Raytheon employees another 6,000.
